She has since written a novel, Desert Flower, which led to the start of a foundation, Desert Flower Foundation (to support her work in the campaign against FGM), and has been featured in the film, Desert Flower. She has been appointed as UN Special Ambassador for the elimination of Female Genital Mutilation. This is a woman who took her life in her own hands, the epitome of female empowerment.
