Waris Dirie, an inspiration to us here at KaiHer. She has undergone FGM, escaped her home in the region of Gallcaio, in the Somali desert near the border to Ethiopia, escaped to London, was discovered by the British top photographer Terence Donovan as a model at the age of 18 and was featured as a James Bond Girl. She has since written a novel, Desert Flower, which led to the start of a foundation, Desert Flower Foundation (to support her work in the campaign against FGM), and has been featured in the film, Desert Flower. She has been appointed as UN Special Ambassador for the elimination of Female Genital Mutilation. This is a woman who took her life in her own hands, the epitome of female empowerment.
